A marine mechanic career combines your love for the boating life with a career that focuses on repairing boat engines. This exciting career can be started by choosing a certificate course in marine engine repair and maintenance or by enrolling in an associate degree program.

The work of a marine mechanic is very diverse. They install, diagnose, and repair inboard and outboard engines. Many go on to work for boat dealers, repair shops, and boat rental companies. This knowledge and applicable experience can be gained by completing an associate's degree in marine and small engine repair or an industry certification offered by a professional organization.

A high school diploma or its equivalent (GED certificate) is required for marine mechanics. Most employers in this industry require, and some prefer, to hire people with post-secondary training. This training can be obtained by completing an associate's degree program in marine and small engine repair or by completing a related certification program. In these programs, you will learn how to identify engine parts and use tools to repair engine malfunctions.

Successful mechanics will be able to apply their extensive knowledge of these engines using tools designed specifically for this job. Their work will require them to repair the electrical, fuel, and mechanical systems of a variety of watercraft. They will also need to demonstrate excellent communication skills when working directly with the public, which will be necessary when providing customer service.
