Branding a company may seem like an easy task. Pick a niche, a service or product to sell, a company name, a logo, business cards, a website, and "voila!" . Now you're in business. Sure, you can become a "business" with a little effort. However, the degree of success depends on knowing and using some basic "secrets" that are not yet well known.

Understanding these four secrets will give you an edge over your competitors right from the start.

1. The company's values must be aligned with your own.

The company's brand represents you and everything you stand for. You will spend hours, days, months, and years working on your business and representing your business. If your company accurately reflects your personal core values and is consistent with none of them, the long hours you spend working on your business will be much less stressful.

2. Your brand is only partly created by you.

It is co-created by the general public in terms of how they view you. You can control the message you send about who your company is, what it stands for, and what it promises. However, you cannot control how that message will be interpreted by the recipients, your prospects. Brands are also subject to public opinion.

3. Discovering, rather than imagining, the ideal customer is the key to success.

Develop a clear understanding of the customer you are trying to serve. Fiction writers create a "back story" for each fictional character before they write a word. They come up with biographical details of the characters, describing how their lives have been affected, which are then reflected in the characters. Then you literally "know" how each character would behave in certain situations and how they would react to various stimuli. As a manager, you have to "characterize" your ideal customer. This knowledge is necessary in order to create products and services that prospective customers will respond to and buy.

4. Customers want to experience, not just buy.

With the vast number of choices available, consumers have come to expect a pleasant and desirable experience with any purchase. Consumers are trained to believe that if they purchase a particular product or service, their lives will change for the better, even if only slightly.

5. Determine your brand strategy.

Think of a brand approach as defining the limits of your procedure and outlining your methods. Later, you design the methods to make it happen.

The success of your company will depend on whether you learn these basic secrets, and how long it takes to learn them.
